Description
The Sun is revered as the God and All-Father in the mythology of the lions. It is from the glorious golden orb that the lions inheret their nobility & strength.
In this character concept panel, the Sun is used as the central element to depict the rise & fall of three pride rulers in the story: Inkosi, Amandla, and Malusi.
- Inkosi, seen on the left, is represented by the setting Sun. A bold and fiery ruler who shared his reign with Malusi, he was nevertheless beset by the passage of time, and fell by the claws of one who was younger and stronger.
- Amandla, set prominently in the middle and framed by the corona of the burning Sun, is the ruling King throughout the majority of the story's length. Yet his portrait is far from glorious, for he is eclipsed by the Moon's shadow whilst consumed by his own flames - a sign for the things to come, and the price he must pay for pursuing the Sun's fire.
- Malusi, the gentle-hearted lion who ruled alongside Inkosi, is featured on the right. Although he and Inkosi loved one another like brothers during the exile of their youth, he was never adored by the pride the same way Inkosi was during their joint rule. Lacking the handsome look of his counterpart (Inkosi is a dashing black-mane, Malusi is not), and endowed with a mild temperament considered less desirable, Malusi had to be content with the company of the older and weaker females while Inkosi claimed the mating right to those who were young and fit. Thus a rift formed between the dyad of Kings, reflected in the piece with the two facing away from one another, and separated in the middle by Amandla. Ruling for several years after Inkosi's passing before being ultimately displaced, Malusi never carried a crowning glory the same way Inkosi did, and by the time of Inkosi's death, his prime was already long past. He is therefore complemented by nothing but the twilight of a fallen Sun.
