Description
Another character panel done for our upcoming novel, The Leopard Sun.
In this piece, we explore the two main lioness characters - Iphiko & Ilanga - as well as Nyota, Iphiko's son, using a very different theme altogether: Stars.
- Iphiko, seen on the left, is a ngenagama - "one who is without a name". Abandoned by her mother due to lack of any perceivable merit, she never received a name (which is highly valued in lion culture). Meek and gentle, she survived owing to the unlikely friendship that developed between her and Ilanga. Ostracized since youth, she was always an outsider looking in, and never found comfort or identity in the mythology of the Sun. Instead, she often gazed up at the evening sky, dreaming of going to some faraway place in a different life. This was how she came to call herself "Iphiko" - a one-winged bird who will never fly.
- Nyota, set in the middle and represented by the Evenstar (Venus, one of the brightest objects in the sky), is Iphiko's orphaned son, presumed dead after Iphiko's tragic passing. This is the reason his outlines are soft and nebulous, for the knowledge of his fate is sealed away from Ilanga, yet his existence promises the hope for a better tomorrow.
- Ilanga, seen on the right looking back, is rough, jagged, but at the same time fiery and almost crazed. Born of a proud heritage (daughter of Inkosi, conceived shortly before his death), and possessing all the desirable qualities, she was the embodiment of everything a lion ought to be: an heiress of the Sun's flames. Yet it was those flames that consumed her friend and unmade her world. What was to become of her? What was she to do with the fire she carried within?
