I am OVERWHELMED with the number of wonderful sweet birthday wishes I received yesterday ^_______________^! Thank you all for taking a moment out of your days to leave a cheerful bright sunny spot in my day. I am so very very grateful to be a part of this community and very humbled by your thoughts and wishes <:.

Thank you so very very much! I will just spend all day today with my head floating in the clouds x}!

You guys are awesome! My day was absolutely flawless and spent in the company of my beloved and under piles of cake, ice cream and presents <8. Phew just finished crawling from under them!

<3<3<3!
I held out for as long as I could..but at last the bandwagon train came by with a noose to my neck and off I went to join the masses. That is to say I joined tumblr and twitter.

I find it hard to keep up with the every day social game with my work schedule and general tendency to hide when I'm not busying with being busy! But I have found it refreshing to feel a bit less the bystander and more the active participant (even if it is a terrible way to go about it, tisk tisk I know!).

As far as Tumblr goes. I have always been terrible at posting my sketches or found it cumbersome and tedious to do so on other venues so I will be using tumblr for posting sketches in addition to works in progress, process pictures (and tips) and the occasional dollop of what I am doing commercially these days! I hope you folks can join me for the ride. I am finding I enjoy Tumblr tremendously and love the way it is setup!

Also please feel free to ask me questions..be it art related or personal..I'll answer whatever I feel comfortable with answering ^^. I love sharing knowledge and giving tips and tricks from what I have learned artistically along the way...though I am prone to delivering advice with a cautionary disclaimer of "I really don't know what I'm doing so there is probably a better way to go about this than my mess!". But happy to share all the same!

Twitter is for everyday nonsense and the occasional outburst of pure sentimentality.

My tumblr is: eternalstirrings.tumblr.com/
Twitter: __Elbereth__ (two underscores on either side)

Please do join me if you are at all interested in all my tangles of sillyness! I would be happy to see you all there ^^.

DD ;__;

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 26, 2012, 12:51 PM

You guys just don't know how happy it made me to get a DD on Dive. And here I was being a mopey dopey face about my art for the past week or so! Thank you guys for filling my days with so many smiles. Each comment reminded me how grateful I am to be a part of such a diverse community of creative minds.

We live in a New World

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 9, 2012, 3:17 PM

We live in a world that with each passing day grows to be more connected. International boundaries no longer define friendships or the people and events that shape our days and move us to action. The majority of my friends today live abroad or at the very least some thousands of miles away from where I live. But I am able to partake in their lives, to know them and even love them and to me the world becomes a small and familiar place and all it's myriad of sorrows become mine. Several decades ago Germany or Spain or Uganda were countries on a map and places in my history books, but otherwise they were just a name, a place that had little impact on my life. In today's technological world, the everyman has a voice and where before these voices were scattered and disconnected from like voices, today they may join in unison and make themselves heard.

To become relevant, ideas need to become familiar and to become familiar they need to be spread. How lucky we are to be able to do so today with such ease, a click of the button and a few minutes of our time.

I encourage you to spare a few minutes of your time to watch this video, take a moment to tweet the video or otherwise link it:

Video

Even if you feel that there are issues that take precedence to this one, to know of this issue costs you nothing and to know it makes it relevant. Awareness itself is a powerful tool for change. Make someone else aware even if you don't think it will make a difference C=.

Beyond this, as a personal addendum, I believe we owe it to the world to better humanity. To hold ourselves to a continuing higher standard. To stop even one such atrocity may not stop them all but it does better us as a whole to say "we will not allow this". It will take many such steps to change the world, but with each small step we prove to ourselves we are better than we were before and that we are capable of change. Today we live in a world that listens and hears voices and cries of people we did not once understand, it is a changed and changing world and we are it's voices.

I have always wondered personally how we are to make people listen and care about the plights of animals and the natural places in the world when so much misery, apathy and hatred exist in our own human world. If we cannot care for a fellow of our own species, how can we truly do so for a species beyond our own? I think the answer is right there. We must do both because the plight and it's consequences are the same. In either case, we will lose, be it our dignity, beauty, or diversity. We must do both, because they are intricately interconnected and one cannot be separated from the other. We,  as the custodians of this world (whether we chose this responsibility or not, whether it is fair to demand ourselves to be held to a higher standard or not) simply must meet the challenge at the risk of losing our humanity.

(PS: As a caveat emptor, do research your causes. It is easy to be stirred emotionally by a well made video or well written article. Even if the cause is legitimate, if you desire to be more proactive on whatever the issue, know what you support and read up on the causes/groups you give your time and money to. Some may mean well but do more damage than good, and some may do with the pretense of doing good. As easy as it is to spread word about good causes in today's e-world, it is just as easy to mistake opinions for facts and take them at face value. I am not saying this to detract from the necessity for awareness on the above issue. I only wish people to be more critical about whatever they read, wherever they read it and do further reading to gather all the facts before moving to action.  )

When did DA...

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 10, 2012, 1:11 PM

When did DA get so complicated??? I obviously don't come here enough...as everytime I do I find it harder to navigate...theres at least 30 more do-hickeys and gizmo-gadgets everytime I log in ;D! User pages have so many things now..it's almost hard to find the gallery button just to see the art all in one place.

I think I must just be getting old...you youngin whippersnappers with all your shiny fandagled apples and gadget thingies.... Excuse me while I try to program my vcr.  DA is so busy now...why back in myyyy day.....

But really I just wanted to pop in and say hello to everyone and say I'm still kicking ;}! Thank you for all the continuing support and all the beautiful comments. You guys are amazing and keep me going more than you know!

Still Alive! Quick Peek In!

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 10, 2011, 3:50 PM

Why I will be darned, I have done a horrible job staying up to date with my deviantart account! Yikes, I am sorry folks. This journal is mostly to apologize to all those lovely people who have sent me notes, recently and not so recently, to whom I never replied. I have been receiving more and more spammy notes on Deviantart so have developed a bad habit to not check them!

So for all those that never received a reply to a note, I apologize sincerely! I tried to catch up with the bulk of them today but gosh there are so darn many! A better way to reach me is to contact me via my e-mail, which I check several times a day in most cases. My email is: xxbalaaxx@yahoo.com. Please feel free to drop me a line there {:.

Again I am sorry folks! And I am sorry for not updating my gallery much. I still lurk but I am afraid I have become terribly cloistered and just busied by life in general. Most of my time these days is spent working on commercial artwork. I am still debating whether to post it here on my DA, it is very unlike the bulk of my body of work and I'm not sure you folks would even be interested in seeing it!

Thank you all for staying with me, I will try to make a better effort to stay up to date with my Deviantart!

Arts to sells

Thu Apr 12, 2007, 1:36 PM
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I don't know why I didn't think to post this here as well.

(Crossposted from Livejournal. You may comment here if you do not have a livejournal account and want to buy something :) )

Alrighty, well indeed I do live, though I have been taking some time to wander the lay of the land, soak up some of this strange stuff they call 'sun' in some areas, and listen to the coyote banter in the mid of the night. The concourse between the coyotes and their domesticated counterparts has been quite rousing and many landmark speeches have been given..or so I am told by the denizen canines (5 in the house, another 7 outside).

Hmm....as the title would suggest, I have some art to sells, to those interested. As it would seem much like the coyotes in the mid of night, as afore mentioned, my wallet has been giving a rather painful sounding yowl and looks like it has a bit of mange(could be moss though, haven't quite figured it exarctly). In other words, I need to make some money and so as much as I had hoped to have a little bit of a stockpile of originals to sell at this year's cons, for now I shall give you all a first crack at buying these. Most if not all of this money will go straight into bills and into my future conventions...and food on the odd occassion.

What doesn't sell shall go to cons, or I shall horde indefinetly. Some of these WILL go on to become paintings, which as yet I am unsure of...I have graciously accepted help in pricing since I am atrocious with pricing my art, but in almost each case I went lower than the suggested prices.

Shipping will be a flat 4$ anywhere within the continental US. This covers as many sketches as you choose to purchase :)..and I will consider dropping prices on combined orders! Right now I prefer paypal, but I will be willing to accept money orders and Cashier's checks for those with a wary eye of the internets.

So the rules of (mis)conduct. Comment and let me know which sketch(s) you would like, first come first serve, and as soon as I confirm your comment, payment can be sent and all that jazz. I will mail all the sold sketches at the end of one week of this posting, so please include your shipping address with your payment as well as which sketches you got(#'s are fine) !! I charge 5 jellybeans extra for each paypal transaction..Im deadly serious!..or well maybe not..I just want some jellybeans.

For those that want to make an offer in private, please e-mail me at xxbalaaxx @ yahoo .com (minus spaces/also my paypal account)

On a sidenote, but not really, I wanted to thank anyone that buys anything. I appreciate every last bit, especially given the trials of the past month or so. I have recently made a big move, which involved a lot of emotions I hoped and prayed (naively) I would never have to experience. But such is life, time to pick up the assorted pieces, fit them together in at least a sort of likeness to my past self, and face the road ahead..hopefully a bit wiser..and a tad bit stronger. To everyone that has given their support in one fashion or other..it won't soon be forgotten...

I hath been bribed..with a pony

Wed Feb 28, 2007, 12:48 PM
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Yes folks, thats right, I hath been bribed with a pony. hibbary insisted I update my journal since apparantly it hasn't been updated in nearly a year(for shame). And so I requested a pony in exchange for an update, and here I wake up this morning to find a snarky pony in my inbox! www.deviantart.com/deviation/4… , doesn't he just look like he is full of happy?! Alright well maybe not, he looks more like the sort rather unpleased with the demasculating term 'pony'. I think I shall name him Prince Purple of Pumpernikel Hill (because I agree, he rather does remind me of the Singer Prince XD!)

WELLP Onto more important matters, or so I shall try to gussy them up as important matters. I have actually been rather scarce at Deviant and so..I am extremely behind on notes. Due to the fact that I have started taking up conventions to pay the bills and go on with the whole eating food and staying alive shtick, I just haven't really had time for commissions. I feel atrocious that I haven't replied to so many notes, but I will try to sit down and go through all of them this week. If you wrote me sometime ago with a request for commission information, please do forgive me. I have been scatterbrained and I owe you all an apology.

As far as commissions go, I will most reluctantly be closing commissions until further notice. They have just not been altogether profiteable for me in past times..and I feel constantly stressed when I owe work..which in turn does reflect in the work I give to people. Since I do rather want to protect my honor as an artist, I do not wish to give out mediochre work I cannot myself be proud of. So for all of those having wanted a commission from me, I am sorry!

I may be accepting smaller commissions (such as pencil sketches, livejournal icons, and convention badges), but until further notice I just cannot honestly accept more realism/hyperrealism commissions. As a result of my old waiting list being so awfully dated, I will be clearing the que for the time being. If I do offer bigger commissions in the near future, I will try to give those patient folks dibs.

Again to all those that are left dissapointed, my sincerest apologies. I feel, however, it is my duty to be honest with my customers and potential customers.

All that aside, for the congoers out there, I will be attending Califur 2007 in May, Anthrocon 2007 in July and Perhaps Midwest Furfest in November 2007. I hope to see you all there. For all those that will be attending, I will have a dealers table and work in the art show so stop on by and say hello :)!

All that aside, I have a few new pieces sitting on my hard drive patiently awaiting to be finished. So hopefully there will be new work from me posted on DA soon.

Thank you all for stoppin by and reading. And Hibbary, thank you for the lovely pony.

Impersonator on Furcadia

Fri May 19, 2006, 5:54 PM
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

First off I am sooo sorry about my delay on the Lottery..a winner WAS randomly chosen after I realized I missed my own deadline. For all those that entered after the deadline my apologies to you, been having a hard time keeping up with deviant.

The winner was :iconblaezfolf: congrats to ya! Stay tuned for future lottos :).

Secondly I am annoyed to find out that apparantly there is someone impersonating me on Furcadia and claiming to be the creator of my artwork. They are, apparantly using 'Balaa' as their username and otherwise treating others rudely. Usually I let such things slide by if its all innocent fun by some kid but this is getting to be annoying. I am receiving pm's via deviant telling me about this person and also having others post insults geared at me in their deviant journal, thinking I am the very same person from Furcadia.

I have NEVER been a member of Furcadia, and in fact, until all this nonsense I only heard the name in passing and never gave it a second thought.

If said impersonator reads this journal. I will ask you politely to respect yourself and me and stop toying with other people. I have never done anything rude to you so put yourself in my shoes, how would you feel if someone was pretending to be you and causing trouble for you when you did nothing to earn it?? Secondly identity theft is a felony. It may seem innocent and fun but it's very much a serious matter that can quickly turn into a legal case. So again, please just save yourself and myself the trouble.

**edit** Meant to add this but I have already written the Furcadia admins about this, hopefully if all else fails that will take care of the problem.

Well it's been a while since I had a chance to do a lotto again and what with the drama in my personal life the past few months, it was far from my mind. BUT I might as well just do it now while it is on my mind.

:bulletred:Do not enter if you have had a dev subscription before, let those who haven't tried it yet have a chance at it!
:bulletred: You may enter if you entered last time and did not win
:bulletred: If you wish to enter simply reply to this journal with your user name or the username of the person you entered (preferrably nothing more, just makes things easier for me)

The winner will receives:
:bulletblue: a 3 month subscription to deviant

I may also randomly choose someone I feel is deserving of a subscription.

Well this year some friends here on deviant roped me into going to Conifur, the local northwest furry convention. I was very reluctant for several reasons, chiefly the worry that my work would just be overlooked. I know that may be silly in some people's eyes and I totally royally got ragged on for saying that XD XD *grin*...but you just don't know what to expect of something you have never ever been to. BUT I am extatic that I went. I had an absolute blast all three days, though I almost ended up going home early several times >_>...because I was running on 0 sleep and just felt awful. But I am so glad I let my nerves settle and after getting some sleep and plenty of 7 up, I felt much better.

Special thanks to WickedSairah, XianJaguar, and nadiaromanova for making me feel SOOOOO welcome and helping me with every little dumb question and not making me feel like a blundering boob. I want to do something freggin amazing for you guys.. You just wow..you guys blew me away with your kindness in every shape and form and I thank you for even just letting me hang with you. I look forward to seeing you all again way before the next con *swipes Xian* you aren't going home ..I've decided :P.

I am so freggin surprised how good all my stuff sold, the only thing that didn't sell was the snow leopard Vixen..and thats fine because...well I didn't like the picture x.x...so I may place it on furbid or something. ALSO...what was amazing was one of the head people of Califur, a con in southern california..from what I am told, came to me and was telling me about the possibility of being a guest of honor in a year or so O__O. I totally couldn't believe it..I mean commmeeee on..I was sitting next to Xian! I've seen her stuff a LOOOT and just like everyone adore her style..so why me? O_o

Also a big random hello to all the people here from deviant that stopped and talked to me...and even bought stuff O_O..you guys were all so nice! I just felt..blessed. HELLOOO to you alllllll!!!

Ok thats it for that, enough boring people with my Conifur High.

Next issue:

Prints

As some of you may have now noticed, I pulled the prints from being sold. There is a good reason for it, firstly there are going to be some pieces that will be sold as limited edition prints and probably only offered at cons or through me. Next, many people talked to me and I came to agree...why shouldn't I receive most of the profit from MY work??? So I willll be making prints available outside of deviant, mostly 8.5 x 11" or 4x6" of selected works. Those prints will be available through me for a price of 10$(for an 8.5 x 11) or $2 for a 4x6" plus shipping(which will likely never exceed more than a dollar or two for shipping..so still a bargain from deviant). Also in some cases I have actually liked the quality of my prints better than deviants, in that the colors are much closer to what I originally intended. I may offer limited streaks of prints on deviant, just to make some side money for lotto's here on deviant.

SOO if you are interested in a print, just pm me or e-mail me and we can work out the details :) and get a print to you ASAP!

LOOOTTTOOOO update

Speaking of lottos, I will probably do another 3 month subscription lotto within the next week and probably another after that. SOOO keeep your eyes peeled :)...I'm not forgetting bout all the nice people here on deviant!

That's all for now folks...sorry for the excessive length of the journal.

I am amazed at the amount of people that did enter this weeks lottery! 115 names were placed into the lottery and 1 was drawn at random. To all those who did not win this time around, don't worry there will be ample opportunities to enter in the future! I am also astounded at the generous folks who selflessly entered their friends and fellow deviants into the lottery. This is a truly warm community, depsite what some would argue.

Ive been watching this deviant growing as an artist for a while now, starting at the now down Sheezy and following her work to the Lion King Fanart archive and finally of course here to deviant. She is an absolutely bright light in the deviant community and most especially among fans of the Lion king. I simply enjoy this person's positive personality and as such good influence on others. This is my tiny gift to you. CHEERS to Kumanor!

Subscription lotteries!

Thu Sep 1, 2005, 6:05 PM
:star:!!!NEWS!!!:star:

A while ago, when I was still getting aquainted with Deviant and feeling like a tiny fish in a gigantic pond, a fellow deviant member went out of her way to make me feel welcome with a subscription to deviant (loish). Now, I feel it is my priveledge to return the favor to other deserving deviants. Since I have had my print account, a few folks have bought prints from me and I have decided to keep the money within the deviant community. SOOO as a gesture of fairness I will be holding a lottery for a 3-month subscription. I will hold these lotteries as funds become available (so obviously when prints sell, lotteries will be held).

:pointr: RULES for Lottery :pointl:

:bulletblue: Must not have a current subscription
:bulletblue: Preferably not have had a subscription in the past
(with the following exceptions: those that got a 1 week freebie from deviant/a subscription when purchasing a print account/a gift subscription from a fellow deviant)
This is not for purposes of discrimination but rather allowing those who haven't had the chance to enjoy the benefits of a subscription to do so!

:bulletblue: Must enter within the one week deadline
:bulletblue: To enter leave a comment in the journal featuring the current Lottery

Wellp that was all rule wise, I may ammend it in the future as I see fit :).

ALSO from time to time I intend to randomly give out subscriptions to those artists I have noticed to be extroardinarily wonderful folks. There are maaaannnnyyy many people that have been generous to me with their words of encouragement and wonderfully eloquent and helpful comments. Not only have these people done such for me, but I notice them around the community going out of their way to leave a few nice words for other folks. To me these words are what makes the time spent on my work worthwhile and I owe my gratitude and inspiration to these people.

Thank you to each and every one of you! You have all made my time at deviant not only a positive experience but also an opportunity to make friends and grow as both an artist and person.

Also random...I have a fan club XD

A kind thank you to :iconkatanimate: and :iconminnesotawildgurl17: You guys are entirely too nice to me. I truly don't feel worthy of having a fan club..but you know...this really has lifted my spirits on a day that was otherwise on a downslope. Thank you for the smiles, many many thanks.

*****EDIT***** I forgot..I noticed someone bought a print of Jungle Dream. This got me to thinking, IF its not too much trouble, Id love to hear from people that buy my prints, mostly to know how they look. I want to make sure Im uploading a high enough resolution so anyone who buys a print gets a nice one :). So if the person who bought that print is lurking about, drop me a note when it arrives..I truly hope it looks nice!!!

Third a short update for waiting folks:

>Silencio Forever...I have a prelim of your chara started, I needa clean it up and get it to you. I already have an idea for the bg and colors I feel would look wonderful.

~Toony black jag in a thick jungle setting...jag sketched..tree needs to be sketched and more research on jungle foliage

~Black Tiger...found a really inspiring site about all sorts of animals with I guess genetic flaws...and they talked about a black tiger...I thought that was the most interesting thing Id ever heard..sooo hopefully Ill have a sketch done with proper basic shaded coloration...I would love to paint that idea

I believe thats all for now..

50k!!!

Thu Jul 21, 2005, 8:11 PM
:star:!!!NEWS!!!:star:

Thank you everyone for the 50k!! Apparantly more than one person saw my 50k so to those 2 first people that sent me a screencap, I will make you the icon of your choice. Seeing as I havent more time to do the larger icons, Im sorry to anyone else who has a screencap for me. *dances around stupid happy* ^_______________________^

The icon will be of 1 of your characters in one of the following styles:
Image hosted by Photobucket.comImage hosted by Photobucket.comImage hosted by Photobucket.com OR if you prefer Image hosted by Photobucket.comImage hosted by Photobucket.com

Also I have been considering starting to do random pieces like 'Promise' for my gallery and offering a single large SIGNED print. The thought behind this is, this large print of the pieces will be the only 'original' signed print of that piece and so obviously will be quite literally like owning the original. Pricewise, I havent a clue what I will charge as of yet..but if there is no interest in this idea, I may not do it at all.

I need some feedback as I do have some ideas stewing on the back burner that I need an excuse to color ;).

I now have four prints available for sale. I wish I could make them cheaper but alas deviant gets quite a big cut of the profit.

Dear DA friends,

I felt compelled to do my best to help out a fellow user here on deviant.  She was recently involved in 2 car wrecks within a 3 week period and as a result she cannot work, nor attend college.  She is not begging for money but rather offering beautiful commissions to help raise funds to fix her car so she can again attend college.  I hope you folks at least visit her journal and read about her plan for yourself and perhaps give an amaziong fellow artist some work to help her out.  thejackbull.deviantart.com/jou… . Have a look at her absolutely astounding gallery and I am sure you will realize that her work is not only simply breathtaking but a wonderful reflection of the hard working, ambitious, and simply pleasant person behind it.

Thank you in advance folks, this is a truly wonderful community.  I am lucky to be a part of it :).

FUUURRR tutorials

Tue May 3, 2005, 1:03 PM
Well recently I've been asked a lot of questions about how I do my fur. Although I feel I am FAAAAR from a master at painting fur, I have learned quite a bit along the way. I feel it my responsibility as a member of this community to share my ideas and knowledge with my fellow artists and thus I have made a small compilation of links to good tutorials tht I have found or have been brought to me by friends.

First off, before you can really get into serious fur work, you might want to invest some time into making your own fur brushes or in finding some.  Well I found two good sets some time back that I found to be rather priceless.  So unless you want to spend the rest of your life filling in one hair at a time, I suggest looking into these, they will save you a lot of headache ;). Trust me, I have tried to do the 'one hair at a time' method...it really kills your wrist.

Brushes: www.3dmenagerie.com/goodies/ba… (compatible with both photoshop and paint shop pro)

Now onto the more important part.  So you now have the brushes and they look spiffey and all but how the heck do you use them???!!!  Well I have found a few places that give good tutorials.  The first of which that I found is located at:

www.fignations.com/jelisa/tuto…

The site has a good list of tutorials for fur, hair, and clothing.  Some of the links are older and are broken but I found a good deal of them work and are rather useful in one way or another.  I won't say which have been the best because to each his own.  One person may find one tutorial better than another and vice versa.  So just take your time and go through the list, it will be worth your while :).

Another pretty good tutorial is:  www.cgnetworks.com/story_custo… author is a professional artist and his methods are much the same as mine in rendering fur.  He also speaks on the topic of color management which my last journal dealt with.  If you are interested in realism with fur invest some time in his tutorial!!  You will not regret it!

Yet another fairly decent fur tutorial is:  div.dyndns.org/EK/tutorial/fro… tips are useful as well.  Her art is located at: div.dyndns.org/ art/new.html and seeing from her skill level I would say her tutorial is definetly worth paying attention to.

That may not seem like a lot of links but trust me in those few links is a world of knowledge and the key to many doors! Do not get discouraged if your first try doesn't work out as you planned.  Do not try to start a big project right off, practice the skills that are taught first and you will be rewarded.  It takes time and petience to render realistic fur and even I still have a LONG way to go.

Also a few other good links to photoshop tutorials(not necessarily fur) are:

www.pslover.com/
www.good-tutorials.com

**EDIT**  A few more wonderful tutorial links

Tutorial from jocarra on DA: www.deviantart.com/view/171248…

Wolf fur tutorial from Katherine Dinger (drawing every single hair):
div.dyndns.org/EK/tutorial/wol…

And the last one, again from Katherine Dinger (shows how to make a good fur brush and use it to make realistic fur):
www.deviantmag.com/issue02/fur…

Special thanks to :iconnajiri: for the links.  Do check them out!

IF anybody else who reads this journal has good links to tutorials or other resources they have found, do feel free to post them for the benefit of all :).

Frustration City Population 1

Sat Apr 2, 2005, 4:46 PM
I see technology progresses yet the masterminds behind it are still oftentimes lacking a small thing called LOGIC. Lets put our heads together and make some sense :P

So why am I pissed off..for those of you that care? Maybe I am simply on the edge because a number of variables that have swayed me to that spectrum but perhaps it is mostly owed to one simple discovery I have made.  Alright it is probably a bit  of malodrama but I am simply trying to understand why the hell technology, with all its infinite capabilities, has overlooked the obvious!

We are in an age when we no longer have to go to a professional printert to have our pictures/cg artwork printed, but rather can do it in the comfort of our own home.  And yet we run into a minor, or major, choose for yourself how you wish to view it, drawback.  There is the hurdle of color management to jump before we can get accurate 'what you see is what you get' prints.  I am sure most of you know that monitors read colors in RGB format, ie they combine RED Green and Blue to give us the millions of color combinations we see.  However, printers have been designed around a CMYK system, that utilizes four colors for the purposes of printing (Cienna, Magenta, Yellow, and Black...go figure why K was made to represent Black).

I am not sure why this problem did not don on me until recently when I went to walmart to use their Kodak Machine to make a print of my 'kissed by the morning' picture so I could send it to my friend as a belated birthday gift.  I was dissapointed to find that the colors of the picture were horridly distorted when printed.  Much more saturated and dark.  The picture, in my eyes, lost the soft quality it originally possessed and seemed rather hard on the eyes.  Well in part I figured the machines were the blame, but I started to play with converting my jpeg images into CMYK in photoshop and viewing them in Paint Shop.  For some reason paint shop better highlights the drastic differences between CMYK and RGB.  The CMYK version of the Cougari Picture looked EXACTLY like the print I had done at Wal-mart.

Now finally to the point of the long winded rant.  Why is it that when so many people have photo printers nowadays are the companies that design and manufactures these printers not responding to the obvious problem of RGB to cmyk conversion?  After all I can imagine a lot of non technology savvy people being dishearted when they see that their print is completely different from what it looked like on the monitor.  And I too can see them spending a ton of money on expensive photopaper and photo ink only to further be discouraged by their results.  I don't believe this makes sense!

I have done some research on how to correct this problem.  It seems you have to have your monitor recalibrated to the colors that your printer would output in order to get accurate monitor to print results.  However these calibrations are NOT free or cheap and nor are they guaranteed to work.  For example you can buy a set to work with your specific model/brand of printer but if you have an lcd screen it may not necessarily work right. One site that sells these callibrations is: iccfactory.com/index.php … there is also software out there design to automatically callibrate your monitor so that your ouput is as it appears on your screen.  One such program is called Spyder, the site is located at: www.colorvision.com/profis/pro… software however is quite expensive and for most 'starving artists' usually simple unaffordable!

A good site I found that talks on the issue is: www.luminous-landscape.com/tut…

For those of you that are serious in getting prints that actually loook like the picture you worked so hard on to be perfect, its worth the read!

I am on the position that this is simply unfair.  If you sell photoprinters, the photos you print SHOULD resemble the pictures you see on your screen.  Otherwise what is the point of wasting your money on the ink, paper, printer even if GOOD results are only achieved by chance or expensive trial and error. Its not fair to the consumers and simply doesn't make sense.  I understand printers were developed seperate from computers and so they work off two seperate platforms..however that doesn't make this problem go away.

Also I am asking those that have perhaps more info on how to get GOOD printed results without having to spend a ton of money and lose quite a bit of hair, to pleasseee share their shortcuts with me.  I want to print my artwork.  I have worked hard on a lot of these pieces and I want to print them as they SHOULD look.  I need to put together a good portfolio and seeing as a lot of my work is digital, that would be impossible without pinting my digital pieces.

My apologies for the rant, had to get it off my chest!
