An otter girl, a quick sketch on 9x12 bristol for the Anthrocon 2006 art show.

I actually had fun doing this one, it wasn't meant to be perfect or flawless but just fun and a little break from building stress..and it certainly achieved that. Yes I am putting a lot of my pencil work in my scraps..not because I view them as scraps but because sometimes the work I secretly love I like to hide away where less scrutinizing eyes are likely to see. I am not perfect and sometimes all the criticism I get on some pieces actually gets me quite down..seems silly but sometimes I still feel quite small in the big ocean of deviant.. Plus I actually value the comments and faves I receive on my scraps more than on my deviations..its actually took the time to look at all the art I do..and I am humbled and honored by that. Thank you to you all!

tools: mechanical pencil on bristol
time:? 3 hours maybe?

I love your depiction of an otter... I know you didn't put it here for commentary neccessarily, but I really like this

I'm amazed by your lovely little otter. She amazes me along with the background. Truly amazing what you can get out of a mechanical pencil.

And I sound really dumb because I used three different forms of 'amaze' in that post. -headdesk-

Not only did I like it enough to make a fav out of it, I sent my friend Kajm to look at it as well. The composition and perfection of the otter girl, as well as the beautiful work of the setting and most importantly the interaction of all the parts involved... I can just really slide into this one you know?

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Considering my tag here on DA, I'm sure you know why this has me squeeing like a little girl. :) :glomp: So few artists it seems are interested in drawing otters. I guess we aren't as impressive as wolves and tigers but none the less, you have done beautifully, as always, with this peice. A definite fave. I know I have lurked quite a bit and just watched you from afar (I figure you have HORDES of fans who comment on your work) but this one had to pull me out of my dark corner. :) I really enjoy your work and this is no exception. The subtle shading and graceful lines of this peice are so very lovely.

I really enjoy all the little details here, the tiny pearls in her hair and on her jewelery, the webbing between her toes, the careful consideration of her sleek pelt. I am in awe. I really like this. I like how you've positioned her in the composition as well. You implied the sinous nature of the river otter by having the body twist and the tail extend out across the bottom. You keep the flow of line to her that suggests this puppy can really move in the water. XD. The background, as always, has been given careful consideration (or at least it seems to the veiwer) and this sets you apart from alot of people, myself included. *blushes* I have a tendancy not to put backgrounds in my work, but you do a wonderful job here at creating an atmosphere of secrecy and privacy, some underwater cave somewhere that we have stumbled upon.

All around, it's just a great peice and I'm trilled as always with your work. :)

Otter! : D <3
This is a really awesome piece. The shading and texture is really excellent, and I adore the scene depicted. The jewelry the otter is wearing is gorgeous as well. Awesome work! : D

Another bee-yoo-tiful drawing by Balaa. ^^ Otters are my favorite. Yayyy. Draw more otters.

I love the fur, and the swirly hair is great. And the circlet on her head is neat-O. Truly. I want one. =3

That is a wonderful picture. The title and the otter remind me of the Brian Jaques Book 'The Pearls of Lutra'. i love the way you've done this picture. It is simply adorable.

Such a gorgeous otter!
Of course I'm a fan of yours, mostly because . . . well, you bring such life, such personality . . . your work is always beautiful and passionate, despite any errors.

Wow, so very pretty! And it's true about what you said with the people scrutinizing your work, it always makes me feel down cuz I work so very hard on my pictures.

But again, beautiful picture, I'm faving it XD

Pearls are one of my favorite gems and the otter is a beautiful creature! I love it all and thank you for putting this up. It gives me motivation to work harder to make my work better ^^

rinniliel Featured By Owner Jun 27, 2006
Really amazing! My gosh, I could go on and on about how incredible this piece is. I love the way you've anthropromorphized the otter in this piece; it's not too much animal, but it's still an obvious anthro. =} :+fav:

I simply adore the amount of detail you can (and do!) put into all of your work! I'm so happy to be watching you!

Anyway, in case you hadn't noticed, it seems like her mouth (and nose?) aren't on the same angle as the rest of her head. They seem more straight on and horizontal. That's the only thing I can see, really.

Keep this up and I'll start liking your scraps better than your formal gallery. =)

Aww, she's beautiful. I love the yin-yang thing on the wall and the little bits of jewellry and detail on the otter herself. Gorgeous :D
Pvyrus Featured By Owner Jun 27, 2006
Man that's awesome, especially the detail! And it only took three hours!? I love that yin-yang design with the paw prints :) Very creative. My only question would be is this taking place underwater (the plant in the lower left side looks like it's floating) or above water (which the hanging bracelets seem to suggest)?

wow! this is beautiful! I really love the paws, especially the foot pad. All the swirls in the picture make it really come together. The little details on the face of the otter and the hair clip thing and the eyes and crown look so good. You are very talented!

You must be totally sick and tired of all these positive comments I'm sending your way, but what's one more right? I like this, the ying and yang...the paws. Very mystical, you have quite the imagination and amazing talent for capturing it just as you see [or don't see] it.

gangyzgirl Featured By Owner Jun 27, 2006  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It's extemely well doner but you put down advanced criticism so you must obviously want some. All in all it's a good work but the effect of light is too well done, I would fill in the light space with a little more then those little spirels and also I am not too sure about those little curls on the bottom of the otter's ponytail. But I'm no art expert, this is just my opinion, it's still a great piece of artwork. The fur texture is great.

Hi-no-Taki Featured By Owner Jun 27, 2006
Very pretty. I adore the pose, and her expression. The yin-yang with paw prints was really clever, too! But I think the prints should be in the repective places of the circles in the symbol itself. The hair in this looks a little stringy as well, so i'm going to assume that's how you wanted it in the Fifth Element picture. Her face looks a little off, though, the {her} right lip looks a bit bigger than the left, but it good also just be my perception.
I think my favorite part would have to be the wee crown on her head, and the wall. Your work always looks like it must have taken a lot of patience. =)
Kobb Featured By Owner Jun 26, 2006
Yay otter! :D She looks wonderful... nice fur texture and anatomy an' stuff. I was just going to say... if THIS is in Scraps, I should give my skills a major overhaul! =P Excellent work, and mechanical pencils rule.
